About Suzanne…

Suzanne M. Smith, LCSW

The clinical experience I bring spans from 1997 to the present. I am licensed in the State of Colorado in Clinical Social Work and hold a Certificate in Couples and Family therapy from The Denver Family Institute. I opened this practice in 2009.

Marriage/couples counseling has been a passion of mine for a long time. I am level three trained in John Gottman’s Gottman Method for Couples, level two trained in Stan Tatkin’s Psychobiological Approach to Couple Therapy (PACT) and level one trained in Terry Real’s Relational Life Therapy (RLT). I work with couples from all walks of life, of any developmental age and stage, and I am fervently LGBTQIA affirming.

I also work individually with people for any reason and have particular interest in relationship work done individually, life transitions, trauma, chronic or life-threatening illness and grief and loss. I am level two trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), which is empirically reliable and valid therapy modality for the treatment of trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). I use EMDR with both individuals and with couples.

Some of the jobs I have worked in the field include adjunct professor at The University of Denver’s Graduate School of Social Work from 2012 to 2016, The Denver Hospice from 2009 to 2012 both as a field social worker working directly with patients and families and as a grief counselor in the grief department, facilitator of Arapahoe County mandated classes for divorcing parents from 2008-2012 and case manager on a geriatric psyche ward from 2007 to 2008.

A little about me personally- I have been married since 1998 and am a recent empty nester of two adult children. I enjoy spending time with my family, hanging out with friends, watching a good comedy, traveling, singing, long walks, storm chasing and everything aurora borealis!

I believe wholeheartedly that good relationships make the world go around, and I genuinely practice this belief from the inside out. Creating a safe and secure rapport with those with whom I work, so open communication in an emotionally safe environment can happen, is the foundation on which this practice is built. Building and maintaining solid relationships is what I constantly strive for in my professional and personal life.

Good quality relationships buffer everyday blows, bring us safety and joy and enhance the overall quality of life. At Align Counseling Center, P.C., my number one mission is for you to know that I will be the last person to give up on you or your relationship!
