Suzanne M. Smith, LCSWAbout Suzanne…

The clinical experience I bring spans from 1997 to the present. I am licensed in the State of Colorado in Clinical Social Work and also hold a Certificate in Couples and Family therapy from The Denver Family Institute.

Marriage/couples counseling has been a passion of mine for a long time, and I am level two trained in The Psychobiological Approach to Couple Therapy (PACT).

PACT is a remarkable couple model in that it goes deep very quickly. This empowers couples to feel heard, better understand one another and respond in ways that support the greater good of the relationship, which ultimately benefits each partner in kind.

Some of my other specialties include securing attachment in families with adopted children. I recently completed Trust Based Relationship Intervention (TBRI) training. TBRI is a modality that helps families who have adopted and are experiencing problems with adjustment and attachment with their children.

I also work individually with people who have or are enduring chronic illness, grief and loss and trauma. EMDR is an excellent tool for the treatment of trauma. I am level two trained in EMDR directly from the EMDR Institute.

I opened my practice in 2009. Since then, I have also taught clinical social work theories to first year graduate students at The University of Denver and worked at The Denver Hospice. If you would like additional information on my clinical experience, feel free to take a look at my resume.

Balancing the demands of family and work can be very challenging. I know this firsthand. However, the blow of what the outside world often throws at us is better buffered when things are going well on the home front.

What I have learned from being a wife and mom in “real time” has brought more knowledge and overall value to my work than anything I was taught in the classroom.

I believe wholeheartedly that good relationships make the world go around. Maintaining solid relationships is the foundation on which my practice is built, and maintaining solid relationships is what I constantly strive and work for in my personal life.

Strong and trustworthy connection with those we love has the power to provide tremendous comfort, safety and healing. This includes the therapeutic relationship. Therefore, I do everything I possibly can to create a safe and validating environment for those I serve.

People derive the most hope when they are empowered to sit in the driver’s seat of their own lives. Therefore, I take a strengths based, creative and collaborative approach tailored to the unique and individual needs of those with whom I work.

A little about me personally… My husband and I have been married since 1998, and we have two teenaged children. We also have two very energetic standard poodles which is like raising toddlers all over again!

I enjoy spending time with my family, hanging out with friends, camping, traveling, singing, cold weather walks, thunderstorms and everything aurora borealis!

Good quality relationships buffer everyday blows, bring us safety and joy and enhance the overall quality of life.

At Align Counseling of Colorado, my number one mission is for you to know that I will be the last person to give up on you or your relationship.
